Inspired by the enchanting azulejos encountered during my journey through Portugal, this art series captures the essence of serenity and calmness in a spectrum of blue hues. Azulejos, derived from the Arabic word al zulaycha, meaning Small Polished Stones, are glazed ceramic tiles that adorn buildings, both inside and out. The allure of azulejos lies not only in their soothing palette but also in the meticulous patterns that tell a story of cultural narratives and history. As I delved into the background of these tiles, influenced by Ming Dynasty Chinese porcelain and Dutch Delftware, among art of several civilizations, I marveled at the interconnectedness of art across continents and centuries. "Small Polished Stones" becomes a reinterpretation of azulejos through my geo-surrealistic lens, a visual narrative of interconnected traditions and the profound meaning derived from sharing art with community.
